Story 01

Capcom's back catalog is doing the heavy lifting

  • Game Publishing & Business Models
🎮 Pro Tip

Ports are the cheapest growth in gaming. The game is already built, the fans already exist, and a new platform is basically a second launch for a fraction of the budget. Every studio should be asking which of its older games is one port away from a second life.

Capcom reported on Oct 27 that of the 36.86M games they sold from April to September, 32.18M were older titles. A big piece of that: Devil May Cry 5 (a 2019 game) passed 14M lifetime after hitting Switch 2 in June, and older Monster Hunter games picked back up once Capcom dated the Wilds expansion and confirmed Switch 2 versions.

Story 02

Valve lets the market decide on AI

  • AI in Games
  • Game Publishing & Business Models
  • Licensing & IP
🎮 Pro Tip

By staying neutral, Valve is letting players decide how much AI they'll accept. Fan sentiment (reviews, refunds, wishlists) becomes the filter instead of a policy. If you're using AI in your game, your community's reaction is the real approval process now.

At Steam Indie Connect in South Korea (also Oct 27), indie developers told Valve's Tom Giardino and Marc Wilkinson they're worried about AI "slop" and people threatening to clone their games. Valve said it won't tell studios which tools to use, and pointed to community as the best defense. (Steam already makes developers disclose AI content players will see, right on the store page.)

PUBG is heading to Netflix

  • Film/TV Adaptations
  • Game Publishing & Business Models
🎮 Pro Tip

An award-winning talent is taking a hugely popular game and going all in. We've seen this work with The Witcher, the Mario movie, Fallout, and more, all with top stars and big budgets. Projects like this turn game worlds into everyone's worlds. This one is going to be awesome.

On Oct 29, Krafton (the publisher behind PUBG: Battlegrounds) confirmed Netflix is developing a live-action PUBG series, with Donald Glover set to write, direct and star. Krafton's own entertainment unit is co-producing. PUBG has sold 75M+ copies and has been free-to-play since 2022.
